5/21/2023 0 Comments How i learned to drive storyOne of the most discomfiting love stories to emerge from the American theater has returned to New York, 15 years after its debut, with its emotional power undiluted. Saying “I love you” (and for the record, he means it) does the trick. What we’re watching, after all, is a middle-aged man (played by a sensational Norbert Leo Butz) photographing his 13-year-old niece (Elizabeth Reaser), who is wearing sexy lingerie and is as self-conscious as all get-out. But don’t expect any reassuring sentimental glow. You’ll feel good in the way you do when two well-cast actors at the top of their games achieve a piercing transparency. But when that moment occurs in the first-rate revival of Paula Vogel’s “How I Learned to Drive,” which opened on Monday night at the Second Stage Theater, it’s unlikely that you’ll feel good at all. How many variations on that scene have you experienced at the theater or the movies? It’s one of the great feel-good clichés of storytelling. And her face lights up like candles on a birthday cake. The guy finally utters those three little words that the girl has needed to hear.

5/21/2023 0 Comments Kanae minato novelKanae Minato’s debut novel, published in 2008, sold three million copies in Japan and was adapted to a popular film. Several of these novels stray far from the halls and classrooms, but all keep their focus on the inner lives of the students and teachers. Three of the six tell their story, Rashomon style, through the points of view of different characters, which mirrors the self-conscious, self-absorbed nature of teenagers, who often seem to live in their own isolated bubbles. These novels offer their own unique pleasures and might be thought of as “Dark Academy, Public School Division.” Here you’re unlikely to encounter classical languages, but there’s no shortage of darkness and treachery.īelow are six novels in this category. But when I was first thinking of the story that would become my novel The Day He Left, I had in mind another category of school mysteries set more prosaically in today’s ordinary public schools, specifically middle and high schools. Gone is the looming presence of Snæfellsjökull, which had served as a directional reference point for so many of the days I have spent in this land of peaks and valleys. In addition, Iceland’s volcanic surfaces can be so puzzlingly alien-some say lunar-that NASA trained astronauts, including Neil Armstrong and Buzz Aldrin, here in advance of the landmark 1969 moon landing. Today, it is hooded by a glacier that covers its summit crater to the depth of more than 650 feet. But seeing is one thing, and journeying quite another.Īt more than 700,000 years old, the volcano last erupted in the third century. This wasn’t difficult, given that Snæfellsjökull’s peak rises nearly 5,000 feet above sea level and, on a clear day, can be seen from Reykjavík-some 75 miles to the southeast. Taking a cue from Verne, I traveled to Snæfellsnes peninsula in West Iceland with my sights set on the iconic stratovolcano. Nevertheless, this dose of reality hasn’t stopped curious travelers from exploring the book’s geological protagonist: Iceland’s Snæfellsjökull. Though Verne was widely regarded in his day for the meticulous scientific research that informed his writing, what he posited in Journey has been roundly rejected: namely, that volcanic tubes lead to the Earth’s core. One hundred and fifty years ago, in 1864, the French novelist Jules Verne published one of his most ambitious works- Journey to the Center of the Earth. 5/21/2023 0 Comments Clarity book kim harringtonHarrington's well-developed characters and tight plot are simultaneously charming, realistically complex, and intriguing. When her brother becomes the prime suspect and two more people are killed, it will take all of Clare's smarts and abilities to uncover the truth before she becomes the next victim. When a tourist girl is found murdered, Clare jumps at the invitation to help with the case: following the clues and working with the police is exciting, even if it requires her to spend time with her cheating ex-boyfriend and the yummy son of the town's new detective. She can uncover memories and emotions by touching objects, her mother can read minds, and her brother is a medium. Sixteen-year-old Clarity "Clare" Fern works in the family business doing psychic readings for summer tourists in their Cape Cod town. Harrington debuts with an auspicious kickoff to a series of mysteries with a psychic twist. 5/21/2023 0 Comments Dr seuss horton hears a who mayorIt's up to Horton to find a safe place for the speck to save Who-ville from destruction, even as the well-meaning pachyderm has to avoid all sorts of obstacles, including Sour Kangaroo, Vlad the Vulture, the Wickersham brothers, and other metaphors of McCarthyism. Called the Whos, these people have a Mayor (voiced by an also-neutered Steve Carrell) who has 96 daughters and a son who won't speak. A relatively neutered Jim Carrey provides the voice for Horton, an elephant who hears a voice from a floating speck and discovers that there are people actually living in it in a place called Who-ville. Seuss' books haven't been as successful as when they were in print, to put it lightly. Seuss tag that comes with the title, this latest computer-animated film from the "Ice Age" team would come off as yet another animal-on-a-mission flick straight from the assembly line. I guess it wouldn't be remiss if I've approached "Horton Hears a Who!" with some reservations as the trailers were anything but something to be excited about. 5/21/2023 0 Comments Methods for treating myocardial infarction comprising adminis... by Alain LacampagneOur “Don’t Wait for a Second” infographic provides actionable information about five key steps that can help patients improve and maintain heart health.ĭownload Now (PDF) Additional Resources Cardiac Rehabilitation Referral Card Help your patients lower their risk of a recurrent heart attack by engaging them in secondary prevention. The reality is monotonous and highly mundane. James portrayal of a rehab and the process involved is commendable. But at the same time his subtle display of sadness and weakness brings out his childlike openness craving for love, care and attention. He comes across as a wasted youth full of anger, hatred, and bodily liquids that at times make you flinch in disgust. It is a man’s fight against the ever gripping chemical addiction that ends in a void. The fine detailing make you almost feel the pain…and yes as clichéd as it may sound – it does “send a shiver down your spine”. James work is absolutely honest and refreshing. Rejecting any kind of self-pity, cynicism, the story is a fine balance of sad memoirs, addiction, life in a rehab, human strength, suburban life, family, love, care, crazy stunts and normal routines. It is a wonderfully crafted comprehensive tale of recovery that makes way to your heart. Refunds cannot be sent to alternate accounts.
